About Shift

Kia ora — we're Calum and Ellen.

We built Shift so New Zealand practices and locum doctors and nurses can find each other directly — no agency in the middle.

Why we built Shift

We've both stood in urgent care clinics and general practices watching the same scramble: a gap on tomorrow's roster, and a practice manager working the phones — calls, WhatsApps, emails to individual doctors and nurses who might take days to reply. When we moved into general practice we found the same problem from the other side: no transparency across Aotearoa about who's offering work, or where to find it.

We didn't see why any of that should need an agency. What it needed was a two-way, transparent platform where doctors, nurses and practice managers find each other directly. So we built one.

What Shift is

Shift is a marketplace for locum work across New Zealand. Doctors and nurses browse real shifts at real practices and urgent care clinics, apply directly, and deal with the practice — no middleman, no percentage taken from anyone's pay.

For doctors and nurses, Shift is free. See how much work is genuinely out there, apply in seconds, and keep everything you earn. If you find a place you love, take a longer contract — with no agency fee attached to it.

For practices and organisations, Shift is a flat monthly fee, sized to the practice and how much you use it. Post a gap, watch it fill, and stop chasing people — the roster, the applications, the confirmations and the invoicing all live in one place.

Who we are

We're both GP registrars based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, with backgrounds in urgent care. We're also a married couple — we trained in Scotland and moved across the world in 2022 to make New Zealand home. Shift is the tool we kept wishing existed, built by the people who needed it.

What we want

For doctors and nurses: to feel the size of what's out there — enough visible work that going a little further afield feels worth it. For practice managers: time back, shifts covered, costs down, and nobody left chasing replies. That's the whole idea.
